ͷ Florida Chapter’s “The Making of the Manual”

A Video in Six Episodes and an Epilogue

    Via The Florida Chapter

    October 1, 2021

The Making of the Manual is a sixty-minute video produced by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, Florida Chapter, in cooperation with the University of and with the support of the cultural grant program. The Making of The Manual consists of interviews with professionals, faculty and students who explain the idea of an architectural manual and describe the process of documenting and composing the drawings to compile into a Manual of Mediterranean Architecture for the City of Coral Gables. The video begins with the earliest conceptual stages and consultations, through the fieldwork and into the classroom eventually.

Pedagogically, as in introduction to architecture, the hand drawing and drafting of classical buildings affords the student an experientially intimate understanding of the constructive and stylistic characteristics of buildings and introduces them to the fundamental qualities of architecture as a discipline.

The drawings, because of the precision of the measurements and attention to detail, constitute a faithful survey of Mediterranean architecture in Coral Gables, and are of valuable use as a reference to architects, builders and lay persons who have an interest in the particulars of Mediterranean architecture, either for restoration purposes or new construction. The collection of drawings constitutes the most complete record of the detailing and elaboration of this architectural style in Coral Gables, the City Beautiful.

This production was made possible with the support of the City of Coral Gables, thank you.

Thank you to all the University of Miami School of Architecture Students & Faculty
that participated in producing the documentation drawings of the historic buildings of Coral Gables.
