The Tudor House

Chatsworth Through Time, produced in partnership with the Duke of Devonshire and the Chatsworth House Trust, explores the history, architecture, landscape, and collections of Chatsworth House. Beginning in the Tudor Period and progressing through five hundred years of history all the way to the 21st century, this series explores the world of Chatsworth, with its own curators, Alice Martin, Head of the Devonshire Collection, and Dr. Alex Hodby, Senior Curator of Programme, as our guides.

Episode One: The Tudor House begins in the sixteenth century with the story of Bess of Hardwick, an extraordinary businesswoman whose marriage to Sir William Cavendish established Chatsworth House, and who later married the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, jailer of Mary, Queen of Scots. Bess鈥檚 business acumen and connections to the highest echelons of English nobility secured Chatsworth鈥檚 status as a major seat of power.

The Powerhouse

Episode Two: The Powerhouse examines the story of the 1st Earl, who became the 1st Duke of Devonshire, and his extensive renovations of the Chatsworth estate that displayed the great power and wealth of the English Baroque period. The locations and artifacts examined in this segment include the Great Chamber, the stunning frescoes of the Painted Hall, the architectural renovations that established much of the facades still visible at Chatsworth today, as well as a period painting by Siberechts and the grand water feature known as the Cascade.

Architectural Treasures

Episode Three: Architectural Treasures features exclusive access to the artworks and artifacts of the Devonshire Collection, particularly the prime examples of English Palladianism in the 17th and 18th centuries, including Inigo Jones鈥� sketchbook and his personal annotated copy of Palladio鈥檚 Quattro Libri (鈥淔our Books on Architecture,鈥�) a drawing reputed to be by Palladio himself, and architectural drawings by William Kent and Henry Flitcroft.

Collecting & Reshaping

Episode Four: Collecting and Reshaping looks at how the house and the land surrounding it have changed and adapted over the centuries to reflect new political developments, social realities, and changing styles. The curators examine artwork by Thomas Smith, James Paine, and Jeffry Wyatville for clues about how Chatsworth has evolved over the centuries, and they also discuss how the landscape architect Lancelot 鈥淐apability鈥� Brown began the shift away from formal gardens to the rolling parklands familiar to the estate鈥檚 visitors today.

The 6th Duke

Episode Five: The 6th Duke follows the life and works of William George Spencer Cavendish, son of Lady Georgiana, who took on the grandest building projects of the estate in the 19th century. He collaborated with the architect Jeffry Wyatville as well as Joseph Paxton, who became head gardener at Chatsworth and later designed the Crystal Palace at the Great Exhibition in London. In addition to the meticulous documentation of his renovations at Chatsworth, the 6th Duke is also notable for his travel journals and for serving as the ambassador at the coronation of Czar Nicholas I in Moscow in 1826.

The 20th and 21st Centuries

Episode Six: The 20th and 21st Centuries takes a radically different approach to the history of Chatsworth in the form of an extensive interview with the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The 12th Duke of Devonshire reminisces about his parents who rescued Chatsworth from the brink of ruin after the Second World War. He and the Duchess then discuss the Masterplan, their remarkably ambitious renovation project and capital campaign from the early 2000s that conserved the stonework and statuary, renovated the roof and utilities, and preserved the estate for the twenty-first century. The Duke and Duchess are also notable for commissioning modern artworks and temporary installations in the gardens at Chatsworth, which drew praise and ire alike from critics and longtime visitors, and sparked a resurgence of attendance. Finally, the series concludes with a special message from Jane Marriott, the Director of the Chatsworth House Trust, in which she lays out the Trust鈥檚 plans to preserve Chatsworth and its collections well into the future.

The 24th Annual McKim Lecture with Michael Imber: The Art of the Architect

At the 24th Annual McKim Lecture, presented on March 12, 2025, the 黑料头条 was honored to welcome Michael Imber, President of Michael G. Imber Architects, as distinguished speaker.

The Art of the Architect celebrates the role that drawing and watercolor painting play in architecture. Architectural drawing as we know it dates from the Renaissance, but with the arrival of computer design programs this ancient art鈥攆ormed of pen, pencil, and brushstrokes on paper鈥攊s sometimes regarded as obsolete. In his lecture Michael Imber demonstrates what a vital contribution the architect can still make at every stage of an architectural project.

Whatever the place occupied by photographs, simulations, and visual graphics in the design process of today, hand drawing still facilitates a moment of deeper connection between an architect and his environment. Unlike a snap taken on a smart phone, a hand drawing is an active response to its subject: what is understood about a place in sensory terms informs the finished design, creating buildings which maintain the balance between the way we live and the natural world around us.

Michael鈥檚 sketches allow him to visualize his environment more clearly, and they provide an immediate visual language with which he can communicate with his team, craftsmen, and clients resulting in authentic and timeless architecture connecting to the landscape.

Dumbarton Oaks with Annabelle Selldorf & Gary R. Hilderbrand

The 黑料头条 was pleased to partner with the Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation for a conversation with Annabelle Selldorf, principal of Selldorf Architects, and Gary R. Hilderbrand, principal of Reed Hilderbrand Landscape Architects, about their work at the historic Dumbarton Oaks estate. Annabelle and Gary discuss their collaborative work on the renovation of the historic greenhouse designed by Beatrix Farrand and McKim, Mead & White in 1925, the new propagation greenhouse and academic building, and the interdependent relationship of landscape, architecture, and art. The event was moderated by Benjamin Prosky, President of the Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation.

Henry Hobson Richardson: Drawings from the Collection of Houghton Library, Harvard University

On January 27, 2025, the 黑料头条 was proud to host an author presentation and celebration of (Monacelli Press / Phaidon), by Jay Wickersham, Chris Milford, and Hope Mayo. Selected by the 黑料头条 for the Classical America Series in Art and Architecture, this is the first in-depth publication of drawings that reveal the creative genius of H. H. Richardson, the greatest American architect of the nineteenth century. The trove of 4,000 drawings, preserved since Richardson鈥檚 death, have been largely unpublished until now. This new book encompasses such masterpieces as Boston鈥檚 Trinity Church鈥� voted the 鈥渕ost beautiful building in America鈥� in 1885鈥� the Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail in Pittsburgh; the Ames Gate Lodge; and the Marshall Field Store and Glessner House in Chicago.

With its curated selection of 450 drawings, meticulously reproduced to reveal the design process and hand of the architect, this book is a revelatory exploration of Richardson鈥檚 work, which set American architecture on a new course and exerted a global influence on the birth of modernism. The Case Studies in New Classical & Traditional Design series explores the design and execution of new contemporary classical and traditional work from the practitioner鈥檚 perspective. Each session explores a unique project or building type to demystify the complexities of how challenging projects successfully come together.

In this installment, Eric Osth, Chair of the Gindroz Awards Committee, hosts a panel discussion with the leadership of , the 2024 recipient of the Gindroz Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing. Kelley Lindquist, President of Artspace, and Will Law, Chief Operating Officer, discuss the organization鈥檚 innovative nonprofit approach to housing development鈥攂uilding strong coalitions of funders and stakeholders within the very communities they serve. Lutyens Memorial Volume 3: Public Buildings & Memorials Panel Discussion with Catesby Leigh, Sam Roche, & Charles D. Warren

To mark the publication of the third and final volume of the Lutyens Memorial Volumes, Sam Roche, Catesby Leigh, and Charles Warren explore the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens in a discussion focused on his rejuvenation of architectural traditions. Through an examination of particular buildings and with the aid of drawings and photographs, the panelists explore Lutyens鈥檚 complex compositions of mass, space and detail, endeavoring to enrich our understanding of the work and its place in the long sweep of classical architecture.

The Architecture of Sir Edwin Lutyens: Public Buildings and Memorials showcases Lutyens鈥� detailed plans and elevations for the greatest examples of his townhouse renovations, memorials and public buildings, including the Cenotaph at Westminster, the Thiepval Memorial, and the colossal Midland Bank building in Manchester.

These reissues are once again bringing to the world鈥檚 attention not just the professionalism of a great architect, but also the loving care with which he set down the minutiae of his visions. They are among the few books in existence illustrated with his working drawings, as well as pristine photos of the finished masterpieces themselves. This volume is a beautiful tribute to a monumental figure in the history of modern architecture.

The Third Annual Lykoudis Lecture with Nancy Steinhardt: How Chinese Architecture Became Modern: The Role of the Beaux-Arts

On April 10, 2024, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (黑料头条) was proud to present The Third Annual Lykoudis Lecture: The Shared Building Traditions of the World, featuring Nancy S. Steinhardt, Professor of East Asian Art and Curator of Chinese Art at the University of Pennsylvania.

In her lecture, How Chinese Architecture Became Modern: The Role of the Beaux-Arts, Professor Steinhardt discusses Chinese architecture, which is a unique building system whose fundamental features鈥攖imber framing, ceramic tile roofs, and courtyards, for example鈥攕pan millennia. This lecture explores the dramatic and human forces that made it possible for Chinese architecture to transform into a modern system, with Beaux-Arts construction as the most important force. The story involves France, the United States, the Soviet Union, Taiwan, and Japan against the backdrop of war-torn China of the 1930s and 1940s, Soviet advisors of the 1950s, and the Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976.

Named in recognition of Michael Lykoudis鈥� incredible contributions as the former Dean of the University of Notre Dame鈥檚 School of Architecture, this series shines a light on the vernacular architecture intrinsic to locales around the world, and how they incorporate classical principles.

The 23rd Annual McKim Lecture with Hugh Petter: The Value of Tradition: A Personal Journey

At the 23rd Annual McKim Lecture, presented on March 6, 2024, the 黑料头条 was honored to welcome Hugh Petter, Director of ADAM Architecture and master-planner, as distinguished speaker.

In his lecture, Hugh draws upon his academic research and the varied project work published in his recent monograph, Living Tradition, to lay out how he believes the past has so much to teach us as we wrestle with contemporary design problems, and how we can produce new buildings that are not only elegant, enduring, and highly sustainable, but which also sit comfortably alongside their older neighbors and landscape settings to create beautiful, harmonious places.

Having helped to pioneer new, collaborative ways of working with landowners and developers, and by adopting a coherent common design language rooted in vernacular traditions, Hugh explains how it is possible to conceive and deliver elegant new commercial urban development that reinforces local character and cultural identity in ways that are at once familiar, popular, and enduring. He demonstrates too how such an approach to development can embrace social inclusiveness and build civilized communities whilst creating a significant long term economic premium and, most importantly, enabling the residents to live low carbon lives.

A Theory of Proportion in Architecture & Design, with Steve Bass

Architect and author Steve Bass presents the initial part of his course, "A Theory of Proportion in Architecture & Design." This is the first installment of a three-part course.

This full three-part course provides an overview of the concept of proportion as a design tool in traditional architecture, including an explanation of the idea of symbolic or qualitative number; an introduction to Pythagorean and Platonic numerical philosophy; the nature of beauty, its relation to number, and its positive, healthful effects; the derivation of the ancient musical octave and its use as a guide to harmony; a discussion of the Golden Section, its mathematics, geometry, relation to philosophy, and particularly its role as a geometrical 鈥渓ogos鈥�; and the connection of all these ideas to the numerical-geometrical canons of classical architecture.

These ideas are applied to historical archetypes, such as the four column portico, through demonstrations using arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic ratio methods of application to achieve harmonic and uplifting design outcomes. The course may be taken as an introduction to these ideas or as a review for those who have some background with the subject.

Classicism in the Sky: The Return of the Elegant Skyscraper

鈥淭hroughout the past decade and a half, New York City鈥檚 skyline-altering luxury building boom has produced no shortage of eye-catching, unmistakably contemporary landmarks. Some are twisting or gridded or stacked like Jenga blocks, others are sleek and supertall, and nearly all are clad in shimmering expanses of glass (see Hudson Yards). But there is another side to this story. Amid the futuristic never-seen-that-before, stretching-into-the-clouds pyrotechnics, some of the city鈥檚 most prestigious new apartment high-rises are being designed by architects who unabashedly look to the past.鈥�

On June 7, 2023, the 黑料头条 hosted a panel discussion as an expansion of the Veranda article, ? by Stephen Wallis. Held at the offices of Robert A.M. Stern Architects and moderated by Stephen Wallis, the panel consisted of Paul Whalen and Dan Lobitz, Partners at Robert A.M. Stern Architects, and Peter Pennoyer, Principal of Peter Pennoyer Architects. The three architects discussed how their firms' buildings have risen to meet the demands of modern life, while still harkening back to the old-school elegance of the classic buildings that form New York's architectural fabric.

Sir Edwin Lutyens and Country Life

Architectural historian Clive Aslet explores how architect Sir Edwin Lutyens built his relationship with the publication Country Life and its founder Edward Hudson, a partnership which established his legacy as one of the greatest British architects.

Clive鈥檚 lecture coincides with the re-publication of the long-out-of-print Lutyens Memorial Volumes, the definitive collection of the architect鈥檚 plans, elevations and working drawings. The original series was long sought-after by architects and enthusiasts and soon became hard to find, but now has been re-published for a new generation who wish to study Lutyens鈥� work and influence. The first two volumes are now available, and the third volume will be released in Spring 2024.

The Lutyens Memorial Volumes: Genesis and History

The Lutyens Memorial Volumes are a landmark of architectural publishing, providing the most thorough coverage ever accorded to a modern British architect. Always intended as a tool for designers, they have been studied by architects as wide-ranging as Frank Lloyd Wright, Robert Venturi, Louis Kahn, and Allan Greenberg.

On May 31, 2023, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art partnered with Lutyens Trust America to present a lecture by David Frazer Lewis, Associate Professor of Architectural History at the University of Oxford. His talk explores the seldom-told story of the genesis of the Memorial Volumes, amidst the austerity, rationing, and ascendant modernism of postwar Britain. The presentation traces the Volumes' influence in Britain and the United States through the course of the twentieth century, and the way that their reprinting in the 1980s and now in the 2020s, has allowed Lutyens to remain an inspiration to many architects today.

The Second Annual Lykoudis Lecture with Marieanne Khoury-Vogt: Style & Substance: Designing a New Urbanist Town in the 21st Century

Marieanne is primarily known for her work as an architect and urban designer with the town of Alys Beach, Florida. The practice, currently based in Alys Beach, FL., engages projects of a variety of scales, programs, and locales. Each is linked by a common purpose: to contribute to, and elaborate a worthwhile and memorable public realm. This is pursued through a firm grounding in local architectural traditions as well as the deployment and transformation of durable building types. During this presentation Marieanne will focus on the work she completed while in this role and share her floor plans, process, and images of her finished works.

Inspired Journeys: How Travel Provides the Spark for Great Design

On Tuesday, March 10, 2020, the 黑料头条 hosted a conversation with Deborah Needleman, Lisa Fine, Miguel Flores-Vianna, and Tom Scheerer on how travel influences and inspires beautiful design today.

Deborah Needleman is a writer, editor, and consultant. She was most recently editor in chief of T Magazine at The New York Times. Previously, she was editor in chief at WSJ Magazine, and creator of the paper鈥檚 Saturday lifestyle section Off Duty. She was the founder and editor in chief of Domino magazine at Conde Nast. Deborah has written extensively on style, design, craft and culture, including, most recently, the 鈥楳aterial Culture鈥� column at the New York Times. She is currently researching craft traditions around the world, and practicing craft in a studio on the Lower East Side and in the Hudson Valley.

Textile guru Lisa Fine is the founder of Lisa Fine Textiles, which specializes in hand printed linens originally inspired by India's colors, patterns, Mughal palaces, and gardens. Since then Fine鈥檚 far reaching travels have continued to influence her collection, where exotic and traditional prints in vibrant and romantic colors feel both worldly and timeless. Her work has appeared in countless publications, and prior to designing textiles, she worked as a contributing editor for Elle Decor and House Beautiful. She is currently a contributing editor for Town & Country. Her book, Near & Far: Interiors I Love, was published in October 2019 by Vendome.

Miguel Flores-Vianna is an author and photographer based in London. In 2017 his book on interiors Haute Bohemians was named the Design book of the year by T Magazine. His travel book A Wandering Eye, entirely shot with his phone, was published in September 2019. In the fall of 2020 Vendome Publishing will release a book on the work and homes of the designer Nathalie Farman-Farma shot by Flores-Vianna. Two further books, entirely shot by Miguel will be published by Rizzoli in 2021, one will be a personal view on Jefferson鈥檚 Monticello, and the second on the interiors of the Chateau de Harou茅 in the Lorraine.

Tom Scheerer has been practicing architectural and interior design in Manhattan since 1985. His work is characterized by clear and logical architectural solutions combined with beautiful, comfortable furnishings.

A Universal Language in Stone and Steel: Architectural Poetics, Globally Considered

On Thursday, June 20, the 黑料头条 hosted Nathaniel Walker, Assistant Professor of Architectural History at the College of Charleston, for a lecture designed to introduce students to a broader conception of the 鈥渃lassical,鈥� and post the argument that classicists working today would do well to demonstrate how their work speaks a universal language of value to the greater human family.

When one hears the phrase 鈥渃lassical architecture,鈥� it is usually the forms of the Classical Mediterranean that come to mind: Greco-Roman columns and pediments, with perhaps a sprinkling of Egyptian pyramids and a dash of Assyrian tile. There are, however, other cultural periods that have been described as 鈥渃lassical鈥濃�攕cholars speak of Classical Chinese culture, the Classic Maya, and the Classical period of Ile-Ife in ancient Nigeria. Great achievements in art and architecture have taken place all over the world, and there are striking similarities between different traditions, including the architectural poetics of structural elaboration, human-scaled proportion, and ornamental pattern. These similarities are meaningful, because they point to the kinship shared by all human beings.

'Perfection is One Thing': Chatsworth and the Art of Capability Brown

In his talk, Aslet explored the diversity of artworks that have been collected at Chatsworth over the years, including paintings from Rembrandt and Lucian Freud, modern ceramics, ancient sculptures, minuscule cameos, expansive gardens, and more. Napoleon's Architects

Barry Bergdoll discusses the renowned work of "Napoleon's architects," Charles Percier (1764-1838) and Pierre Fontaine (1762-1853). Percier and Fontaine were not only the Emperor's official government architects, but two of the most celebrated teachers at the legendary Ecole des Beaux-Arts, responsible for developing the highly influential neoclassical Empire, or Directoire, style of design. Barry Bergdoll is Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History at Columbia University and former chief curator of Architecture & Design at the Museum of Modern Art (2007-14). A specialist in 18^th and 19^th century French and German architecture, he is the author of numerous books on modern architecture, including European Architecture 1750-1890, in the Oxford History of Art series published in 2000. He was also co-curator of the exhibition 鈥淗enri Labrouste: Structure Brought to Light鈥� at MoMA in 2013, where he also curated exhibitions on Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Latin American modern architecture, and the Bauhaus. He is currently completing a book on the history of exhibiting architecture, based on the Mellon Lectures delivered at the National Gallery of Art in 2013.
