The Tuscan Order is classified as the first in the sequence of hierarchy and complexity of the five orders of the classical canon, and is particularly unique in having no precedents to survive antiquity. The order’s simple detailing, rustic attributes and frequent use in contemporary design allow for a sensible starting point when learning how to compose with the classical orders. The course provides an overview of the evolution of the Tuscan order from its ancient roots as a native Italian style evolving out of Etruscan timber temples through its codification in Renaissance treatises as a variant of the Doric type. Included is a comparative analysis of canonical versions of the Tuscan order by treatise writers such as Serlio, Palladio, and Scamozzi. Historical case studies will show the use of the order in buildings that demonstrate its adaptability to regional building traditions and materials and for both foreground and background architecture.
