Hosted by the 黑料头条 Southeast Chapter | 3 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture (Proportion) | 3 AIA CES Learning Units|Elective
This course provides a fundamental introduction to architectural proportion, with an emphasis on the art of geometric proportion. Students will learn design techniques, practice drawing, and study the congruous proportions of famous architects in the classical tradition such as Andrea Palladio and Thomas Jefferson.
Course instruction combines PowerPoint illustrated lecture and step-by-step instruction in geometric constructions and techniques for achieving well-proportioned spatial compositions. Class time will be evenly divided between learning how to draw geometric constructions and analyzing the application of incommensurable proportional techniques to the human anatomy, the natural world and classical works of architecture. The class will begin with a brief illustrated introduction to the value of proportion, the experience of drawing with a compass and rule, and useful definitions and theorems. Participants will follow step-by-step instructions for drawing elementary incommensurable 鈭2, 鈭3, and golden mean systems of proportion and observe the application of proportional techniques in nature, human anatomy, design and architecture. A PowerPoint image-based presentation will parallel instruction of drawing constructions and analyses. Guidance will be provided by the instructor.
Instructor:
Equipped with a broad architectural education, founding principal, Connor McKell Bingham has refined a distinctive sensibility and appreciation for vernacular, traditional, and classical architecture.
A decade-long tenure with Historical Concepts鈥 president, Andrew Cogar, accelerated Connor鈥檚 passion for exceptional design and business. As an architect with Historical Concepts, Connor managed several award-winning projects which can be found published in Architectural Digest, LUXE, and Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles.
Connor received a Bachelor of Architectural Studies from the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and was the final undergraduate student to live, work, and study at Frank Lloyd Wright鈥檚 homes and studios—Taliesin and Taliesin West. He later earned a graduate degree from the University of Colorado-Denver, giving him a rare immersion into both modernist and classical traditions. Awards and grants, such as his Clinton Scholarships and the J. Neel Reid Prize, laid the groundwork for his commitment to architectural education and research.
As a principal at Pierre McKell, Connor blends this scholarship and practice to create thoughtful, enduring places. He is driven to advance the classical tradition, mentoring emerging architects, strengthening educational programs, and designing buildings that enrich the lives of his clients.

Certificates of Completion for both AIA members and non-AIA members are available upon request.
At the end of this course, participants will:
1.Gain a foundational knowledge of the elements of geometric systems of proportions, including basic definitions, theorems, and techniques.
2. Execute basic drawing fundamentals (how to draw a perpendicular line, how to find a midpoint) with a compass and rule.
3. Produce 9 x 12鈥 drawings and spatial compositions with compass and rule that demonstrate elementary geometric proportional systems based on incommensurable 鈭2, 鈭3, and 蠒 (golden mean) ratios.
4. Observe the application of 鈭2, 鈭3, and 蠒 (golden mean) systems of proportion in examples of nature, the human anatomy, and classical architecture on which to build a broader understanding of geometric proportional systems and their application to design and architecture.

Most 黑料头条 continuing education courses are suited to all artistic and academic backgrounds. Seasoned artists and novices alike have enjoyed and improved on their skills in 黑料头条 classes. If a class has any pre-requisites or is recommended for a certain experience level, this will appear on the class listing on the 黑料头条 website. While Chapter courses may be listed on classicist.org, you should check the Chapter website, or contact the Chapter directly, for the most up-to-date details including dates, times, pricing, and pre-requisites.
Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) in architecture includes topics that relate to the structural integrity and soundness of a building or a building site. Course content must focus on these topics in order to provide HSW credits. For more information on 黑料头条 classes that have been approved by the AIA for HSW credit, please contact [email protected].
